Study : Black dads more involved in children’s lives than other groups

 Larry Seward | CBS News

Highlighted Study

In Miami, members of Congress gathered to address negative stereotypes surrounding Black fathers in a policy meeting led by U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson of Florida’s 24th District. The event, supported by the Omega Psi Phi fraternity and researchers, highlighted findings from a 2013 Centers for Disease Control (CDC) study that challenged common misconceptions about Black fathers. The study revealed that Black fathers are more actively involved in their children’s lives than fathers from other racial groups.

Black Dads Matter

The event featured stories from involved fathers like Corey G. Patterson, a certified pubic accountant and partner in a Broward County firm. Patterson holds two college degrees and professional certifications, yet he views his role as a father as his most significant achievement. Reflecting on his relationship with his four-year-old son, Patterson shared, “The best title I’ve ever had is being a father. It feels like a time machine, allowing me to share all the lessons I’ve learned throughout life with a younger version of myself.”

The policy meeting highlighted how Black fathers, despite facing systematic challenges, continue to defy harmful stereotypes. Data from 2023 further supports the notion that Black fathers play a crucial role in their children’s lives, reshaping outdated narratives and inspiring positive change. By fostering these discussions, policymakers aim to continue breaking down barriers and uplifting the contributions of Black fathers across the country.

Early Start

Every morning, Corey G. Patterson wakes his son, Cole, at 6:30 with the theme song of the cartoon DuckTales, simply to start the day with joy. Patterson and his wife also adjust their schedules to prioritize Cole’s youth basketball practices and games.

“When I tell people about my day and the things I do with my son, they often look at me and say, “Really?” Patterson shared. “You’re doing that?”

Black Dad Stereotype

This very involvement was the focus of a CDC study last decade, which debunked the misconception that Black fathers are less engaged in their children’s live. Yet, the stereotype persists, prompting U.S. Representative Frederica Wilson to convene a policy meeting at the U.S. Capitol last week to address it.

“It is disingenuous how Black fathers are perceived and stereotyped across this nation,” said Rep. Wilson. “It’s time to amplify the message and set the record straight.”

2023 Stats

“Despite being disproportionately affected by the school-to-prison pipeline, mass incarceration, health disparities, and the gun violence epidemic, Black fathers spend more time with their children than others,” said Rep. Wilson. Recent data reinforces this finding. According to 2023 study by the National Center for Health Statistics, 70% of Black fathers bathe, dress, and feed their children daily, compared to 60% of white fathers. Additionally, 61% of Black fathers read to their children regularly, while the rate for white fathers stands at 52%.

Black Family Ties

In 2023, studies indicate that Black fathers are more engaged in their children’s lives than white fathers. Approximately 75% of Black fathers participate in daily activities like feeding and playing with their children, compared to around 55% of white fathers, showcasing them strong commitment of Black fathers to their families.

Black Love

As of 2023, approximately 46% of Black fathers are married to the mothers of their children. This statistic reflects a significant trend in family dynamics and underscores the commitment many Black fathers have to their families, even in the context of broader societal challenges.

Conclusion

Crazy right? Even though Black men are an Endangered Species, studies show that most Black dads show up for their seeds. (Correction: Endangered Species are protected by the government, Black men ARE NOT) Black dads are dope. The bond between Black fathers and their children is incredibly powerful, fostering emotional security, self-confidence, and a sense of identity. This connection strengthens the family unit, promotes positive development, and plays a crucial role in shaping the child’s values and future success. Our children need to see someone that looks like them holding a powerful positon , working hard, being a leader so the child can be proud of them and want to follow the path their father has paved for them and be the best version of themselves. Love your kids and show them the right way to navigate throughout the world by leading by example, studies show no dad is better than Black dads, the other dads are outta there 😁. They are trying to say Black dads are not present in their kids’ lives to that we say….
