This Week’s Topic: Can You Be Toxic To Yourself?

Your Weekly Source For Truth & Clarity

YOU HELLA TOXIC

Happy Friday! Quick question, can you be toxic to yourself? A person can develop patterns that are harmful to themselves, without even realizing it. It’s poison, “Toxic” isn’t a clinical diagnosis, it’s a way of describing repeated thoughts and behaviors that keep hurting your peace, confidence, relationships, or progress. The important distinction is: you aren’t a toxic person simply because you have unhealthy patterns. Patterns are learned, which means they can also be recognized, challenged, and changed. You gotta switch that shit up a little bit.

EMOTIONAL POISON

People can have harmful behavior for many reasons, and it usually isn’t simply because they want sympathy. Anxiety, negative self-talk, avoidance, self-sabotage, or repeatedly expecting failure can develop from fear, past experiences, low confidence, learned family patterns, or because familiar behavior feels safer than uncertain change. (WHY: “Here’s what may be driving me to do it.”)

SELF-TOXIC BEHAVIOR

Self-toxicity is a slow emotional poison: you become both the person pouring it and the person drinking it.”What does it look like? Self-toxic behavior can look like constant negative self-talk, expecting the worst, comparing yourself to everyone, people-pleasing, ignoring your own boundaries, procrastinating out of fear, repeatedly returning to unhealthy situations, or criticizing yourself for every mistake. (WHAT: “Here’s how I’m hurting myself.”)

HOW TO DETOXIFY

Start with these three:

  1. Catch your inner voice. When you criticize yourself, stop and ask, “Would I speak to someone I love this way?”Change the language.

  2. Take responsibility without beating yourself up. Admit what needs changing, but replace “I’m terrible” with “I can handle this differently next time.”

  3. Break one pattern at a time. Set one boundary, stop one avoidance habit, make one difficult decision, or leave one unhealthy situation. Small actions teach your brain that change is possible.
